Lilac School reflects all that is best in Valley Center's past, present, and promise. Nestled among large native oak trees, the mission architecture of the facility hearkens back to a time when community members were summoned by a ringing bell tower to hear news in a central courtyard. A bell in our courtyard now welcomes a diverse population, providing a background for interactive educational programs, assemblies, and community events. Our country setting celebrates our rustic heritage and inspires the Lilac staff to foster a well rounded, well planned, healthy and positive learning environment.
Anticipated growth and hour-long bus rides in this remote rural area necessitated a neighborhood school. Lilac School was designed to meet the needs of a changing community firmly rooted in its agricultural tradition. Lilac opened in 2003 in the vast region of Valley Center. Parent volunteers provide a strong link between the school and the community. Lilac builds long-term relationships between the school and families because of the continuity of services it offers. As the community relies on the school to provide the best environment for their children, Lilac relies on the community to support the energetic building of everyone's potential. Lilac School constructs multiple educational programs to engender respect and responsibility in a safe and positive environment. We are committed to providing innovative programs supported by current research. Our Two-Way Bilingual education reflects research that bi literacy is desirable and attainable. This internationally recognized program promotes the sequential study of foreign language.
Lilac teachers are highly qualified and offer individualized instruction to meet the needs of our students. Professional knowledge, staff development, and old-fashioned hard work have resulted in remarkable Academic Performance (API): 733 in '03-'04, 8ll in '04-'05, 835 in '06-'07, and 848 in '07-'08. Lilac School continues to meet its academic goals and is currently an 8 in 'State-Wide Rank (a comparison of the performance of an individual school to others statewide) and a 10 in Similar Schools Rank (a comparison of schools with similar educational opportunities and challenges statewide). These rankings show where a schools API falls on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the highest).
Valley Center Pauma Unified has made a commitment to train all staff in the area of 'Professional Learning Communities' (PLC). Lilac School has made a great effort to integrate the philosophy of PLC into our experienced staff's dialog during our regular meetings (SAS, grade level, vertical, bilingual, staff, release day) in our continuing effort to promote collaboration. During these professional opportunities, we develop school and student SMART Goals in our effort to stay in touch and focus on what we need to accomplish. Our teachers recognize that we must work together to achieve our collective purpose of learning for all.
Lilac School has taken a leadership role in modeling innovative programs for homework guidelines (Lizard Learning Lab), reading and math pods, DRA standardization, citizenship recognition luncheons (Lizard Luncheon), character education activities (Lizard Lair and Character Patriotic Assembly), school wide commitment to Math 24 and Accelerated Reader, and an "All Day Every Day" attendance program.
The infrastructure of Lilac School continues to grow. Like all timeless structures, Lilac reflects the hope of generations to come. As we continue to grow as learners, as teachers, and as citizens, our community will thrive in the promise that is Lilac School.
